If a contractor decides to throw debris through holes in the floor without using chutes, the area below should be completely enclosed with barricades at least 42 inches high and at least 6 feet back from the projected edge of the opening above. The contractor should post warning signs at each level. Material handling at the upper level must stop before anyone removes debris from the lower level.
Floor openings not used as material drops must be covered. Covers must be substantial enough to support the weight of any load that may be imposed. They also need to be secured to prevent accidental movement.
