An important preparatory operation is determining whether hazardous materials have been used or stored at the site. Hazardous materials might include chemicals, gases, explosives, flammable material, or other dangerous substances. If a substance cannot be easily identified, a qualified person should take samples and analyze them before demolition begins.
Only approved containers and portable tanks should be used for the storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids. Smoking should be prohibited near hazardous operations or materials. Where smoking is permitted, safe receptacles shall be provided for smoking materials.
If dangerous substances have been used in any pipes, tanks, or other equipment on the property, testing and purging shall be performed and the hazard eliminated before demolition starts.
